Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy
-
Psychotherapy is a way for people to talk about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with a trained mental health professional. It's kind of like having a conversation with someone who can help you understand yourself better and come up with healthier ways of dealing with life. It can be helpful for people who are struggling with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, or eating disorders. It's a safe and supportive space where you can open up and talk about things that might be hard to talk about with friends or family.

There are many types of Psychotherapy.
You can choose from individual therapy, focusing on your thoughts and behaviors and at times providing you with weekly tasks. With individual therapy you can also choose to focus on a specific area of your life, or a situation that occurred (e.g., traumatic event).
Couples therapy is a type of therapy focused on helping a couple work through challenges, understand their relationship better, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.
Family therapy is designed to address specific issues that affect the psychological health of the family such as major life transitions or mental health conditions.

The length of treatment varies from one person to another and will depend on your goals and history. In your first session, you and your therapist will begin these discussions and have an idea of what the treatment length may be. As research has suggested, the majority of individuals will remain in therapy for approximately 12-20 sessions to achieve their goals set. Some may need less sessions, while others may need more sessions, it all depends if there is a short-term problem or multiple conditions that you want to work with.
